The Masters is often decided on the back nine on Sunday and that was the case for the women who played their final round on Saturday, as Kupcho showed why she is the world's top-ranked amateur by playing the final six holes in five under par.
Kupucho, fresh off what she called her first "perfect" round, started on the back nine and was cruising along at three-under for the day until her 14th hole, the par-four fifth, where she made her first bogey of the week.
Only six women finished under par, and no one challenged Kupcho or Fassi, a senior at Arkansas from Mexico.
It featured all the heritage of Augusta National, including honorary tee shots by Nancy Lopez, Lorena Ochoa, Se Ri Pak and Annika Sorenstam.
It's only as recent as 2012 that the golfing mecca lifted its ban on female members and this round of 18 holes will represent the first time an all-female event has taken place at the home of the Masters.
Apple TV Is the Death of Apple TV
Apple says Apple Card can track spending across devices, won't have any late or annual fees, and will offer 2 per cent cash back. One new aspect of the app is a dedicated kids section, which clearly took some cues from Netflix's children's UI.
Olarra, who works as an auditor in Madrid, grabbed the final spot on the second playoff hole - the par-3 17th - where she rolled in a birdie putt from 25 feet. She three-putted the 10th to fall two behind, and sat on a bench at the 11th tee to gather herself.
But Kupcho, who made bogey at No. 10, drew even at the par-5 13th.
"I started out strong and was hitting the ball really well", Kupcho said. She's 1 shot back of the lead.
"She's not afraid to be great, and that's what makes her great", Fassi said.
"Hopefully, I can go out and figure out what was going on with my swing".
Fassi retook the lead with a birdie at the 14th, but Kupcho countered with birdie at the 15th and 16th to regain the lead.
After American Anna Redding struck the first competitive shot the focus shifted to Kupcho and Fassi, the two close friends and college rivals sharing an emotional hug before teeing off.
Meanwhile, young Thai talent Sadom Kaewkanjana held his nerve on Saturday to become the fastest qualifying school graduate to win on the Asian Tour when he clinched the Bangabandhu Cup Golf Open by one shot.
"It's going to be a tight race all the way to the finish", Kupcho said. "And to make it look fun".
