Data indicates that the pilots struggled with repeated nose-down commands from the plane before it crashed into the Java Sea and killed 189 people. The doomed plane was headed from the Ethiopian capital to Nairobi, Kenya, when it crashed six minutes after takeoff.
Transport Minister Marc Garneau is grounding all Boeing 737 Max 8 airplanes in Canada over safety concerns arising from the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that killed all on board, including 18 Canadians. Garneau, a former astronaut who flew in the space shuttle, emphasized that the data is not conclusive but crossed a threshold that prompted Canada to bar the Max 8.
U.S. aviation regulators have signalled their confidence in the safety of Boeing's embattled 737 Max jetliner, issuing a global notice of "continued airworthiness" a day after the model's second deadly crash in less than five months. Pilots complained that the Max 8's autopilot system had unexpectedly pushed planes into a dive and failed to provide enough thrust, requiring crews to take control manually.
On Monday, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said the department had sent investigators to Ethiopia and would act if it had information about a threat to the public. It does not intend to issue new recommendations about the aircraft to customers. It was put through flight testing as part of the certification process prior to the aeroplane entering service.
"External reports are drawing similarities between this accident and the Lion Air Flight 610 accident on 29 October 2018, " the FAA said.

Boeing, which makes the Max8, issued a statement saying it supports the action to temporarily ground the plane.
Although there is no proof of any link, the twin disasters have spooked passengers, led to the grounding of most of Boeing's 737 MAX fleet and hammered shares in the U.S. plane maker, the world's largest. But they might not have any recourse.
