Apple says it has disabled group FaceTime after a bug was revealed letting callers eavesdrop on recipients before they accepted a call.

The bug worked by adding your own number to a Group FaceTime call, which then allowed you to hear audio from the original recipient's phone, even if that person did not accept the call.

Anyone can call you on FaceTime and hear audio or see video from your phone before you answer.

Second, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and add yourself to the call. If you keep it active, just be aware that incoming callers may be able to listen and/or view you from your iPhone. The company, which attracted criticism from business and political leaders, said earlier on Monday that it would release a software update "later this week" to fix the bug.

A new FaceTime bug can allow people to listen in to iPhone and Mac users.

As a result of the bug, Group FaceTime has been unavailable since 10:16 PM ET last night, according to Apple's System Status page.

In a statement to Buzzfeed, Apple said it had already identified a fix for the issue and would be rolling out a software update later this week. If you're running iOS 12.1 or later, you could be at risk of being spied on by whoever calls you on FaceTime. Hitting the volume rocker also showed video as reported.

The software patch will be issued by the end of the week. Alternatively, from the menu bar, click FaceTime and select the Turn FaceTime Off option. In the meantime, you might want to consider turning off FaceTime if you're afraid of friends (or enemies) abusing the bug.

The glitch affects devices using versions iOS 12.1 or later.

Users can disable FaceTime by going into Settings, navigating to the FaceTime section, and toggling off the green button at the top of the screen.
