Study links gum infection to Alzheimer's disease

Gum disease–causing bacteria could spur Alzheimer's

Research: It may be possible to restore memory function in Alzheimer's, preclinical study finds

Although the gum disease and Alzheimer's link has been mixed in various studies, Lynch explains that the link they revealed is much more statistically significant than in previous research.

The families form the study population of the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer's Network (DIAN), an worldwide consortium that is investigating the roots of Alzheimer's disease.

In other words, it's unknown whether gum disease increases the risk of Alzheimer's or if people with dementia have an increased risk of gum disease because of poor oral care. "We will have to see the outcome of this ongoing trial before we know more about its potential as a treatment for Alzheimer's", he said.

Lynch mentioned that despite "significant funding and the best efforts of academic, industry and advocacy communities, clinical progress against Alzheimer's has been frustratingly slow".

A new study suggests that it may be more hard to detect Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Hispanic patients. Tau only gets messy when it twists and tangles, which damages nearby brain tissue. So far, there is no cure for the disease.

Greenland Ice Melt Reaching "Tipping Point"
Scientists have warned Greenland's ice is melting far faster than it was in 2004, and cities such as NY could be swamped. The study also shows that the higher sea level could be potentially risky for US coastal cities such as NY and Miami.

An estimated 5.7 million people in the USA are living with Alzheimer's, and that number is projected to rise to almost 14 million by 2050.

"We know for sure that the blood brain barrier is contributing to the evolution of each of those diseases in different ways".

One theory promoted by the new research is that cognitive impairment is causing adverse oral health.

In those with the faulty gene variant, protein levels were higher at baseline and rose over time.

"Infectious agents have been implicated in the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease before", Dominy said in a statement.

Missing boy, 3, found alive in North Carolina
Breanna Hathaway , who identified herself as Casey's aunt, said the boy told the family he was with a bear for two days. Professionally trained searchers will continue to work overnight. "Casey has been found alive".

'But the evidence of causation hasn't been convincing. The scientists then tested the brains of 53 people with Alzheimer's disease, finding the toxic enzymes from P.?gingivalis in 51 of them. Cortexyme's gingipain blockers have passed initial safety tests and the company plans on launching a clinical trial soon that will investigate the drug's effects on cognition.

Research published Wednesday in the journal Brain shows a possible solution by focusing on the emerging field of neurobiology called epigenetics. The study also finds that in mice, the bacteria trigger brain changes typical of the disease.

In experiments on mice, they found that mice infected by mouth with P. gingivalis later showed signs of brain infection and deterioration; signs similar to those found in humans with early-stage dementia.

The team detected the organism's toxic proteases, or gingipains, in the neurons of patients with Alzheimer's disease. The new blood test detects a type of protein known as "Neurofilament light polypeptide (NLP)" that normally resides inside neurons, and makes part of their internal skeleton.

The research team also developed a drug that they hope could be used to treat Alzheimer's. "It really will be important to see how this plays out in human randomized controlled trials, which is the gold standard for understanding whether a therapeutic targeting something like the P. gingivalis mechanism would actually be effective", she said. Investigators reported the compound was safe and well tolerated in healthy older volunteers and Alzheimer's patients when given at a range of doses for up to 28 days. It was well-tolerated, and the nine patients with Alzheimer's disease showed improved results, compared with another group who did not receive the treatment, when completing several cognitive tests. "We would send patients off for more specific Alzheimer's tests if the results come back showing a cause for concern", Professor Masters said.
