Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse Was Super Awesome
22 January 2019, 12:43 | Brenda Erickson
A Super Wolf Blood Moon will light up the sky this weekend
There was only one total lunar eclipse this year, and it happened last night. At the peak of the spectacle, sunlight passed through Earth's atmosphere and lit the moon, making it appear to glow red.
FULL moons and lunar eclipses have always been associated with various legends, myths and dark apocalyptic theories.
When the full moon moves into Earth's shadow, it darkens, but it doesn't disappear.
Dave (@sw1ller/Twitter) sent us this picture of the eclipse and moon as it glowed red, Dave said: "I$3 managed to get some very bad shots of the moon while on night shift".

This is the only total lunar eclipse that will be visible in 2019, according to NASA. It was the first full moon of January, often referred to as a wolf moon.
Since the penumbra is much fainter than the dark core of the Earth's shadow, the umbra, a penumbral eclipse of the Moon is often hard to tell apart from a normal Full Moon.
The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles shared an image of the rusty-colored moon - which was to be the last total lunar eclipse visible in the United States until 2022. In January, it's known as the "wolf moon", inspired by the hungry animals that howled outside of villages long ago, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. This leaves behind mostly red light that bends, or refracts, into Earth's shadow.
