China, US trade talks end in Beijing

China-U.S. trade talks end 2nd day with no sign of progress
The growing optimism allowed traders to overlook a report of a steep inventory jump for US gasoline and diesel.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said Kim's visit and the trade talks were "two separate matters".
The USTR said officials broached those topics and discussed the need for any agreement to include "complete implementation subject to ongoing verification and effective enforcement".
The statement added that talks also "focused on China's pledge to purchase a substantial amount of agricultural, energy, manufactured goods, and other products and services from the United States".
Those purchases would help meet another key demand from Trump: that China take action to reduce the massive US trade deficit with its biggest economic rival. At the heart of U.S. concerns is the "Made in China 2025" industrial policy, a strategy Beijing hopes will allow it to supersede United States technology supremacy, which it has since played down without indicating it will fully abandon the plan. China retaliated with tariffs of its own.
Stocks cinched their fourth consecutive gain Wednesday as indexes around the world build on their early 2019 rally.
Liu, the chief economic adviser to Chinese President Xi Jinping, made brief remarks at the negotiations, a person familiar with the meeting said. Macy's went public in February 1992 and reached an all-time high of nearly $73 a share in mid-2015, but four of the five biggest one-day plunges in its history have come in the last three years. The index, the benchmark for many mutual funds, retirement plans and investment professionals, has climbed 9.9 percent since December 24.
The S&P 500 index added 11.68 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,596.64.
Uncertainty over the outcome of US-China trade talks cast a pall over Asian markets yesterday as both sides were silent over what might lie ahead.
Chipmakers rose and other technology stocks edged higher, while high-dividend stocks like utilities and household goods companies made strong gains. Yet investors remain wary as they await concrete details of U.S.
"From the beginning we have believed that China-U.S. trade friction is not a positive situation for either country or the world economy".
Trump and his officials have repeatedly accused Beijing of the "theft" of American intellectual property and of forcing U.S. corporations to transfer technology to their Chinese partners as the price of doing business in China.

The inclusion of minorities among this year's Golden Globes nominees and winners still marks a step in the right direction. Hosting the gala were comedian Andy Samberg and actress Sandra Oh .
"Talks with China are going very well!"
China is facing the daunting task of presenting a credible plan to meet Trump's demands to cut down the trade deficit. A statement from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said negotiators will "report back to receive guidance on the next steps".
Chinese officials have suggested Beijing might alter its industrial plans but reject pressure to abandon what they consider a path to prosperity and global influence.
The truce came after the two sides imposed import duties on more than $300 billion of each other's goods. Economists say the 90-day window is too short to resolve all the conflicts between the biggest and second-biggest global economies. Forecasters expect American orders to slump this year. To Lighthizer - and thus the USTR office - China's promise to buy more US goods is of less interest than the need for "structural changes".
As the trade talks wound down, China's top economic official, Premier Li Keqiang, met with CEO Elon Musk of electric auto brand Tesla Inc.
Musk and other businessmen met with Li on Wednesday in Beijing at the Great Hall of the People. Growing investor optimism helped overshadow a government report showing a steep inventory jump for US gasoline and diesel, a bearish signal for future crude demand.

John Kelly breaks with Trump: 'To be honest, it's not a wall'
Trump also sought to push back against Democratic arguments that a border wall is an antiquated approach to illegal immigration. The president shut down the government, demanding $5 billion for his border wall but Democrats have refused to meet the demand.
