No end in sight for US government shutdown

Trump threatens to shut down border as government funding stalemate drags

Trump also said the US would cut off all aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador for "taking advantage of (the) USA for years!"

"I've had members come to me saying they are returning holiday and Christmas presents they bought because they are anxious about paying rent", National Treasury Employees Union President Tony Reardon said in an interview Thursday.

Opponents, especially in the Democratic party but also some in Trump's Republican party, say that a physical wall is impractical and that the idea is being used as a political tool to whip up xenophobia in Trump's right-wing voter base.

Democrats are likely to move a bill to fund the government late next week, while Republicans will take up Trump's argument that Democrats are weak on border security and make incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the issue.

He's still at the White House, awaiting work by Congress on those spending bills that government employees are depending on.

Trump and the top two Democratic leaders engaged in a televised war of words on December 11 in an Oval Office confrontation during which the president took ownership of the coming partial shutdown.

Guatemalan boy dies after being detained by United States border agents
The boy returned to the hospital later in the day and reportedly died hours later after suffering from nausea and vomiting. Her death fueled criticism of President Donald Trump's immigration policies from Democrats and migrant advocates.

As Breitbart News reported on Friday, reports revealed that Pelosi was spending the shutdown at a luxurious resort in Hawaii.

He added: "If we had a Wall, they wouldn't even try!" It also is beginning to pinch citizens who count on public services.

Mulvaney accused House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of stalling negotiations.

Attempting to ratchet up the pressure on Democrats Saturday, Trump apportioned blame for the recent deaths of two migrant children while in the custody of U.S. Border Patrol.

"I do not see progress being made that would indicate Ms Pelosi is going to compromise before Jan 3", Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., a close Trump ally, said in a text message to The Washington Post.

But even that may be hard without a compromise because the Senate will remain in Republican hands and Trump's signature will be needed to turn any bill into law.

'Journalist of the Year' fired in disgrace
CNN has since stripped Relotius of its Journalist of the Year award. Moreno also reported his concerns to DER SPIEGEL . He also made up dialogue and quotes.

In fact, Pelosi has all but locked up the support she needs to win the speaker's gavel Thursday and there has been no sign that she and Schumer are in conflict.

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill added that Democrats united against the wall and won't seriously consider any White House offer unless Trump backs it publicly because he "has changed his position so many times".

Trump's prospects for getting what he wants from the shutdown appear to be diminishing by the day. "They told us last night that they were not countering our last offer", he explained. It was also not guaranteed that Trump would settle for that amount.

Trump visited San Diego in March to review border wall prototypes commissioned by the Department of Homeland Security, but he has not visited a Border Patrol station or USA port of entry.

His tweets are the president's first public comment about the deaths of two children, an eight-year-old boy named Felipe Gomez Alonzo and a seven-year-old girl named Jakelin Caal, who were taken into custody with their parents after attempting a unsafe crossing into the United States at the Mexico border.

Supreme Court denies Trump administration request to immediately enforce new asylum rules
District Judge Jon Tigar in San Francisco said Trump's order conflicted with federal law and could not take effect. Circuit Court of Appeals then refused the administration's request to lift Tigar's order.
