Israeli war planes attack Damascus arms depot and other targets, Syrian state media claims

Syria's air defences have repelled a missile attack on Damascus suburbs on Tuesday, Syrian state television reported. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The official SANA news agency and the state broadcaster both reported that air defences opened fire on "enemy targets" to "confront" them.

The U-K-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also verifies that the missiles have been fired from Israeli planes.

"It's an Israeli raid", said Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the war monitor.

The Israeli attack was carried out from inside the Lebanese airspace, said the state TV, adding that the air defenses have intercepted a number of missiles, some of which were intercepted while over Lebanon.

The reported attack near Damascus is the first since US President Donald Trump announced last week that the US would withdraw all of its 2,000 forces in Syria, a move that would leave control of the oil-rich eastern third of Syria up for grabs.

"The aggression is still ongoing", said a presenter on state TV, which interrupted its programmes to air patriotic songs.

Loud explosions have been heard close to Syria's capital Damascus overnight, in what the Syrian military says were Israeli air strikes on a weapons depot.

"An IDF aerial defence system activated in response to an anti-aircraft missile launched from Syria", the official Israeli army Twitter account later said. The source cited information that came directly from senior Israeli military officers with direct knowledge of the attack.

The latest air strike on Syria was performed by Israel on November 29.

Russian Federation blamed the Israeli military for that incident - a charge rejected by Jerusalem - and has supplied Syria with the advanced S-300 air defense system.
