Trump Democrats spar over government shutdown with no deal in sightMore

The partial federal shutdown was expected to drag into Christmas as President Donald Trump and congressional leaders remained stuck in a standoff over his border wall with Mexico.

"It's very possible that the shutdown will go beyond the 28th and into the new Congress", White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said on "Fox News Sunday".

Trump, who cancelled plans to go to his Florida resort on Friday for Christmas because of the shutdown, was scheduled to discuss border security with USA homeland security officials on Monday afternoon.

Says Mulvaney: "We moved off of the five and we hope they move up from their 1.3".

Irate with Powell for a series of modest interest rate increases that Trump claims have hampered the USA economy, the president expressed his disdain for the Fed chairman once more.

The uncertainty also helped pushed Wall Street into another rout on Friday, ending its worst week in a decade. "At some point the Democrats not wanting to make a deal will cost our Country more money than the Border Wall we are all talking about". Several Cabinet departments and agencies have been closed since Saturday after their funding lapsed.

Interior secretary Ryan Zinke, who greeted visitors at the Second World War memorial and other sites in Washington during the last shutdown, said he is stepping down at the end of the year.

Donald Trump knew hush money was wrong, says Cohen
When asked for his take, Cohen said it sure "seems like" Trump is afraid, because "that's what he does" in these situations. Prosecutors confirmed last week in a filing that they believed the president ordered the payments to protect his campaign.

It looks like Christmas will be over and done with before the federal government will have a chance to get fully back to business.

On Sunday, a top Trump aide said the shutdown could continue to January 3, when the new Congress convenes, with Democrats taking majority control in the House.

Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer said in a statement that Trump "threw a temper tantrum and convinced House Republicans to push our nation into a destructive Trump Shutdown in the middle of the holiday season".

The president said virtually every Democrat we are dealing with today strongly supported a border wall or fence. At the same time, it's not always clear whether any of the hours of conversation result in decisions that drift too far from Trump's own instinct to stay close to his base. Democrats have ardently rejected Trump's demands for $5 billion to build the wall, and anticipate more leverage once they take the House majority in January.

"This is something that is unnecessary. Democrats have always been for smart and effective ways to secure our border", he said.

From coast to coast, the first day of the shutdown played out in uneven ways.

Yet the disruption is affecting many operations and some 800,000 federal employees. Another 380,000 were to be furloughed, meaning they will not report to work but would also be paid later. The Senate has passed legislation ensuring that workers will receive back pay.

Even by his standards, President Donald Trump sent an unusual number of tweets out on Christmas Eve in the US.

Despite the disruption, Trump has appeared to savour the prospect of a shutdown over the wall for months.

"If you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall, plain and simple", Schumer said, accusing Trump of supporting an inefficient wall that would end up "swindling the American taxpayer". The negotiations have centered on border security funding amounts and how that spending would be restricted.

Those being furloughed included almost everyone at NASA and 52,000 workers at the Internal Revenue Service. Also still functioning were the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Border Patrol and the Coast Guard.
