The mother of four is accused of conspiring to defraud banks to unwittingly clear transactions linked to Iran, in violation of USA sanctions. The US Department of Justice accuses the Chinese executive of conspiring to defraud banks.

The arrest of Meng has put a further dampener on Chinese relations with the United States and Canada at a time when tensions were already high over an ongoing trade war and USA accusations of Chinese spying.

Meng Wanzhou appeared in court Friday as she sought bail after being arrested in Canada during a layover on her way to Mexico.
