The president rejects calls for the acting attorney general to recuse himself from overseeing the Russian Federation probe over comments he made in 2017 about the Mueller investigation.
Overseeing it all is Whitaker, a former college football player and USA attorney from Iowa who was brought into the Justice Department a year ago to serve as Sessions' chief of staff.
"I can tell you Matt Whitaker is a great guy", Trump said. And he was always extremely highly thought of, and he still is.
In fact, Trump has met with his hand-picked appointee more than a dozen times. He did not mention that White House chief of staff John Kelly had called Sessions beforehand to ask for his resignation.
He also said Mr Whitaker was well regarded by various Iowa Republican leaders and added: "I feel certain he will make an outstanding Acting Attorney General". Chuck Schumer, said he should recuse himself because of his comments on the probe. Rep. "I want to get the elections over".

He also announced media leak crackdowns and tougher policies against opioids, and his Justice Department defended a since-abandoned administration policy that resulted in migrant parents being separated from their children at the border.
The new position handed him oversight of Mr Mueller's investigation into possible ties between Russian Federation and Mr Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
How many people will show up remains to be seen.
Trump has brushed off those concerns, saying Friday, "This only comes because anybody that works for me, they do a number on them".
Senate Republicans could confirm a new AG on a simple party-line vote.
The move made Whitaker supervisor of the investigation, which has hung over Trump's presidency.
In ordinary times, a president's decision to replace his attorney general halfway through his term wouldn't set off alarm bells about possible obstruction of justice. Trump argues that since Whitaker was confirmed 14 years ago as the USA attorney for southern Iowa, he doesn't need Senate confirmation.
The Mueller probe should not extend to the finances of Trump, his family or their business, the Trump Organization, he argued.
"I think this seems to be planned like a murder", Dean told CNN's Jake Tapper on "CNN Newsroom". The recusal left the investigation in the hands of Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller two months later after Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey. After Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders this week promoted a video created by right-wing conspiracy website InfoWars to attackCNN's Jim Acosta, one reporter asked Trump whether he was comfortable promoting a video that many experts say was doctored.
It is signed by the attorneys general, all Democrats, of Massachusetts, New York, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia. "He was a really distinguished US attorney in Iowa".
He later tweeted that Iowa Gov. Joni Ernst, U.S. Sen. He later ran unsuccessfully for Senate and headed a conservative watchdog group. Whitaker also has ties to Andrew Miller, who has been called as a witness before a grand jury. The company admitted no wrongdoing and Whitaker was not personally named in the Federal Trade Commission investigation.
