At least 29 people were confirmed dead in the wildfire that turned the Northern California town of Paradise and outlying areas into hell on earth, equalling the deadliest blaze in state history, and the search for bodies continued Monday.

Thirteen more bodies have been recovered in California, bringing the death toll in the U.S. state's deadliest wildfire to 42, officials say.

The camp fire burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses in Paradise, more structures than any other California wildfire on record.

The death total equals the 1933 Griffith Park disaster in California, which is the deadliest fire on record for the state.

Glenn Simmons, 64, told AFP in the nearby town of Chico that he had been sleeping in his vehicle since Thursday, unable to find a space in a shelter.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said: "We are doing everything we possibly can to identify those remains and make contact with the next of kin so we can return the remains to the family".
