In a statement issued by the State Department, Pompeo said he had met with the Saudi king, the crown prince and the foreign minister during his stay in Saudi Arabia Tuesday "to determine what happened to Khashoggi".
Mr Khashoggi, a Saudi national who contributed to The Washington Post and criticised policies of King Salman's son Crown Prince Mohammed, has not been seen since Oct 2, when he went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain official documents for his upcoming marriage.
"This guy is a wrecking ball, he had this guy murdered in a consulate in Turkey, and to expect me to ignore it, I feel used and abused", the South Carolina Republican said on "Fox and Friends".
Meanwhile, a Turkish forensic team allowed to search the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where Mr Khashoggi was last seen reportedly found "certain evidence" he had been killed there.
The case has strained U.S. -Saudi ties and cast a shadow over Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's efforts to overhaul the kingdom's economy and attract foreign investment.
Trump says he doesn't "want to get" into King Salman's mind, but says, "it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers".
Khashoggi, 60, is feared to have been killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. "They also indicated they would get this done quickly", Pompeo said before arriving, adding the Saudis vowed that no one would have immunity.
The Washington Post has previously cited unnamed USA and Turkish officials pointing to audio and video recordings that prove Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate and was then dismembered.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticised rapidly mounting global condemnation of Saudi Arabia over the mystery of missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi, warning of a rush to judgement and echoing the Saudis' request for patience. He's going to probably over the next couple of hours - sometime prior to your show, but he will be getting back to me.
"Here we go again with you're guilty until proven innocent", Mr Trump said.
The White House is brushing aside threats by Saudi Arabia that it may economically retaliate for any USA punitive action imposed over the suspected murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, pledging a "swift, open, transparent investigation" into his disappearance.
Turkish officials would not comment on the disposal method for the body, pending investigation and a planned search of the consul's residence.
"I think we'll also be guided by what other countries are doing", he said.
