If officially named by Met Office and Met Eireann, Friday's storm will be the third of the season and be named Storm Callum.

They warn of "strong southeast, veering southwest, coinciding with high spring tides on Thursday night and Friday morning".

Rivers, including the Towy in Wales, burst their banks and homes were left without power as the west of Britain was lashed with rainfall, with parts of south-Wales severely affected, with images showing towns partially submerged across the region.

Met Éireann has already issued a Status Orange warning for the country's coastal counties as the Atlantic weather system approaches.

The ESB said that a peak of around 60,000 homes, farms and businesses were without power at around 4am yesterday, which was reduced to 30,000 by 7am.

Flooding and falling trees have seen major disruption across most rail services in Wales, while trains in Devon and Cornwall are also likely to be delayed.

The amber warning remains in place until 6pm on Saturday, while the broader yellow rain and wind warnings that include parts of north-west and south-west England, western Scotland and Northern Ireland will remain in place until midnight on Friday.

Strong winds and torrential rain have prompted the latest Met Office warnings of flooding and travel disruption, with Storm Callum expected to particularly impact western parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

A man who died after a landslide in south Wales during Storm Callum has been described as a "witty, charming, loyal and handsome son".

The rain is again expected to be accompanied by strong winds, which may increase autumnal leaf fall and potential for blocked drains/culverts, heightening the potential for flooding.

Forecasters are warning of more of the same over the weekend, although some parts of England will escape the worst.
