Cyclone Titli kills five in eastern India, leaves thousands without power
It crossed the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast near Palasa in Srikakulam district to the south-west of Gopalpur around 5:30 am.
Cyclone Titli, which intensified into a "very severe cyclonic storm" over the Bay of Bengal, made landfall on India's eastern coast early Thursday, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported. "Several trees and electrical poles fell down late on Thursday morning when the cyclone hit".
The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) informed that six fishermen, who had put out to sea, were killed.
"Due to the forecast of severe cyclone named TITLI in Odisha on 11th & 12th October 2018, the RRB exams will not be held in any of the centres under the jurisdiction of Railway Recruitment Board /Bhubaneswar i.e.at Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Sambalpur, Khurda & Berhamapur cities on the above dates", said a statement posted on the official website of RRB Bhubaneswar.
This cyclonic storm will pass over Odisha to reach Gangetic West Bengal.
They were accommodated in more than 1,100 cyclone shelters.
Also, operations at Paradip port have been suspended and all ships have been shifted to deep sea.
Of the 15 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 13 have been deployed along with the Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) at vulnerable places.
Affected districts are Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Balasore districts.
Fire services teams were asked to be on alert to respond at short notice of the district administration. "Power is being restored in the coastal districts, however, it will take time to restore power in Gajapati, which is among the worst affected areas", said Sethi. Meanwhile, Howrah-Hyderabad East Coast Express was cancelled for today.
Christine Blasey Ford, psychologist
Christine Blasey Ford's hearing began with senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee giving opening statements for 30 minutes. He strongly denied the alleged assault on Ford, and accusations by others, characterizing them as last-minute smears .
The maximum brunt was borne by Gajapati district, with uprooted trees hampering movement of vehicles.
However, it is believed that major damage has been avoided, partly due to the emergency measures which were put in place before the storm hit. Depending upon the rainfall, we may see some flood in coastal Odisha.
The cyclone also triggered heavy rainfall in at least three districts and caused minor damage to power and communication.
Horticulture crops suffered extensive damage in Srikakulam district while paddy suffered damage in Vizianagaram. Potential threat from flying objects.
Uprooted trees fell on the roads, disrupting vehicular traffic.
