Mr Trump has defended his pick again

Democrats had fought tooth and nail to stop Kavanaugh´s candidacy, claiming that the accomplished, conservative-minded judge was not suited to the Supreme Court.

The confirmation gave the Republican president a major political victory ahead of crucial November 6 congressional elections, with Mr Trump's second lifetime selection for the nation's highest judicial body.

The justices themselves have expressed concern in recent years about public perception of the court.

Independent court analysts, however, predict Kavanaugh is likely to concur with more conservative interpretations of the law, giving a solid 5-4 ideological edge on the court to those who lean to the right. "What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency, and due process", Trump said.

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said Monday he was apologizing on behalf of the whole country to his new conservative Supreme Court justice after one of the most contentious confirmation processes in United States history. Dianne Feinstein (FYN'-styn) for the initial public disclosure of a woman's sexual assault accusation against Judge Brett Kavanaugh before he was confirmed to the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh was accused of sexual misconduct in high school and college.

The Senate vote approving Kavanaugh's nomination followed a bitter partisan fight that became a firestorm after sexual misconduct allegations emerged.

He later wrote in a newspaper opinion piece that he regretted some of his comments. "They're a credit to the country and the Senate", Kavanaugh said. And I will always be a team player on the team of nine.

President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh to fill the Supreme Court seat of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, who also attended the new justice's first day on the bench.

The appeals were brought by an environmental group and companies that supported the rule, which had limited hydrofluorocarbons used in a variety of products including spray cans and air conditioners.

Trump and Rosenstein had been scheduled to meet last week to discuss The New York Times report that flung Rosenstein into limbo. As the plan was taking shape, Rosenstein went to the White House expecting he would be fired but wound up staying in his job.

While Trump apologized on behalf of the nation for "the awful pain and suffering" Kavanaugh and his family had suffered and declared him "proven innocent", the new justice assured Americans that he would be fair and was taking the job with "no bitterness". Noting that the Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional, he said his focus now is to be the best Justice he can be.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, speaks to reporters as he leaves the chamber following a procedural vote to advance the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, at the Capitol in Washington, Oct. 5, 2018.

The ceremony took place in the East Room - the same location where the President first announced Kavanaugh's nomination 13 weeks ago.

McConnell disputed the president's assessment on Wednesday.

The justices then heard arguments in a series of cases about prison terms for repeat offenders and what constitutes a "violent felony" that would open up recidivists to more serious sentences. The cases concerned a Florida robbery conviction and burglary convictions in Tennessee and Arkansas.
