During testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on allegations of sexual assault leveled by accuser Christine Blasey Ford, Judge Brett Kavanaugh delivered an emotional denial and a stunning rebuke of the confirmation process, at times breaking down in tears.
During the Senate hearing on Friday, Flake huddled with Coons and other Democrats on the panel to enlist support for a bipartisan effort to call for a one week delay so the FBI could investigate the claims made by a number of women against Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.
Sanders said on "Fox News Sunday" that the White House is "not micromanaging this process" but also said an open-ended probe into Swetnick's claims and whether Kavanaugh may have misled lawmakers in his Senate Judiciary Committee testimony would not be acceptable.
In swing state New Hampshire, former Republican Party chair Jennifer Horn said Republicans are "grossly underestimating the damage that would be done" at the ballot box in the short and long term should they confirm Kavanaugh.
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday said the FBI's supplemental background investigation "would be limited to current credible allegations" and must be completed in a week. While the scope of the investigation remains unclear, Trump says the FBI "has free rein" and that he wants agents to interview whomever they deem appropriate. "And we're out of the way and letting them do exactly that".
Swetnick has claimed, in a sworn statement, that Kavanaugh and Judge engaged in lewd behaviour with young women at high school parties, and alleged the two placed drugs or alcohol in punch in order to inebriate women so they could be "gang raped" by other partygoers.
On Monday, I was with the organization that I co-lead, the Center for Popular Democracy Action, and hundreds of people from across the country who came to D.C.to urge their senators to vote no on the Kavanaugh nomination.
"We're not going to give it to them", Trump said.
But other women have spent hours calling Senate offices in support of Kavanaugh, condemning what they saw as an anti-Republican ploy that's damaged not only Kavanaugh's reputation and livelihood but also his accuser's.
"Having them do a thorough investigation, I actually think it will be a blessing in disguise", Trump said. "While I would gladly welcome the opportunity to work with President Trump on a new nominee for this critically important position, if Judge Kavanaugh's nomination comes before the full Senate for a vote under these circumstances, I will oppose it".
The Times report said that while the Federal Bureau of Investigation was not barred from investigating Swetnick's allegations, it does not plan on questioning her directly.
The others include Mark Judge, a friend of Kavanaugh who Ford said witnessed the assault and Leland Keyser and P.J. Smyth, who she said were at the gathering. "You see what's happening right now", Trump said. "They don't care who they hurt, who they have to run over to get power", he said.
Ford testified Thursday that she was "100 percent" certain that Kavanaugh, not another man, assaulted her in 1982.
"The people who have real leverage on this thing are the three Republican senators who are still undecided", she said.
"It'd be hard for me not to support her, but I really, really, really encourage her to vote against him", Noyes said of Collins, who doesn't face re-election until 2020.
"Nobody could deny that her testimony wasn't compelling, that it wasn't impactful", Sanders said.
Emma Scott, an 18-year-old University of South Carolina freshman from Charleston, South Carolina, said that, while she doesn't doubt Ford endured a trauma of some kind, she wasn't convinced it could be tied to Kavanaugh.
Round, of Vermont, said she feels the whole episode could end up hurting Democrats more than helping them in this fall's elections, just more than a month away.
"Look at me when I'm talking to you", she demanded.

Trump Jr. mocks sexual assault claim against Kavanaugh
Susan Collins, R-Maine, wouldn't say if the vote should be postponed. "I think he's on track, very much on track", Trump said. The FBI has I think gone through a process six times with him over the years where he went to higher and higher positions.
