China's trade surplus with the United States ballooned to a new record US$31 billion in August despite a raft of USA tariffs, official data showed Saturday, adding fuel to the flames of a searing trade war.

Trump told reporters Friday that his administration was days away from imposing a new round of tariffs on imports worth $200 billion, and that it could follow up with another round of tariffs on goods worth an additional $267 billion.

In a letter to the U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer, the company said tariffs would affect the Apple Watch, AirPod headphones and Apple Pencil among other products.

On Wednesday, Apple warned in a letter to the US trade representative that Apple's competitiveness could be hurt, leading to higher prices for consumers.
