Burt Reynolds, the ever-mustached actor with roles in a a handful of classics like Boogie Nights, The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit, and Deliverance, has died.
Hollywood icon Burt Reynolds has died at age 82 after a suspected heart attack. He previously underwent heart surgery in 2010.
Reynolds' high-speed hijinks in "Smokey and The Bandit" made him the biggest star in the world, and turned the black and gold 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am he drove in it into an American muscle vehicle legend. Reynolds had also been in relationships with Dinah Shore, Inger Stevens, Chris Evert, Judy Carne, LoniAnderson, and mentioned dating Hawn and Farrah Fawcett in his memoir.
Three years ago, he said during an interview that the love of his life was Sally Field, his co-star in "Smokey and the Bandit".
Reynolds was best known as an action star, often preferring to do his own stunts, but balanced his resume with romantic, comedic and dramatic parts, too, earning his lone Oscar nomination in 1998 for "Boogie Nights". I was interested in having a good time.
Burton Leon Reynolds was born on February 11, 1936, in Lansing, Michigan, to parents Fern and Burton Milo Reynolds.
At times struggling to walk, Reynolds was given a chair on the celebrity walkway so he could speak to a limited number of reporters about his film "Dog Years".
He was nominated for an Oscar in 1997, for his portrayal of porn director Jack Horner in Paul Thomas Anderson'sBoogie Nights. He was a fine athlete and played American football at Florida State University in the 1950s before his professional American football hopes were dashed by injuries suffered in a auto crash.
Reynolds said in 2012 that he regretted some of his film choices.
Although Reynolds was best known for his relaxed, wise-cracking, charismatic on-screen persona, he also had some success as a more serious actor.
But it was John Boorman's 1972 thriller "Deliverance", which cast Reynolds as outdoorsman Lewis Medlock, that is widely credited for launching his early career. Burt made his Broadway debut in Look, We've Come Through, toured with the production, and began taking acting classes once he returned to NY. And there's one thing they can never take away: "Nobody had more fun than I did".
"I think mostly because he was young and full of himself", Reynolds said of Anderson in a GQ interview in 2015.
