California Lawmakers Pass Net Neutrality Bill

Public Knowledge Welcomes California Open Internet Bill to Restore Net Neutrality Protections

Under new law, bars in LA, Oakland and other Californian cities could serve alcohol until 4 AM

California lawmakers have voted to make net neutrality state law, becoming the latest of several states to approve such measures.

California lawmakers rallied enough votes Friday to pass the nation's toughest net neutrality law to prevent internet providers from favoring certain websites, setting up a fight with federal regulators who voted previous year to erase such rules.

It remains unclear whether Governor Jerry Brown would have signed the law if it had passed.

"This bill is the strongest legislation restoring and defending net neutrality protections in any state-and prevents internet service providers from blocking, throttling, slowing content, or engaging in anti-consumer practices like zero-rating", said Carli Stevenson, campaigner for the advocacy group Demand Progress.

Now at Category 5, Hurricane Lane bears down on Hawaii
Residents are stocking up on essentials and have been remembering how Hawaii was hit by a devastating hurricane in 1992. A Hurricane Warning has been issued for the Big Island, a Hurricane Watch has been issued for O'ahu and Maui County.

In addition, it would prohibit internet providers from collecting fees from apps and sites in order for them to reach users.

The measure is scheduled for votes in the Senate and Assembly Friday night following months of contentious negotiations. Jerry Brown's signature is the next step on a road that could lead to the U.S. Supreme Court. Ajit Pai, the FCC chairman appointed by President Donald Trump, pitched the repeal as a way to stop the federal government from "micromanaging the internet".

Telecommunications industry groups including the California Cable and Telecommunications Association and the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association opposed the legislation. "We hope that other states can look to this legislation as a model for net neutrality standards".

After passing in the Assembly on Wednesday, SB-826 breezed easily through the Senate yesterday. 1906 by Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin (D), won a final vote of 48-14 in the Assembly Aug. 30 to accept Senate amendments.

The Manafort charges stem nearly completely from his personal businesses but they came to light after he went to work for Trump . Similarly, Trump flipped from fury that Cohen's offices were raided to claiming that he and Cohen were never all that close.

It is now unclear whether or not the California state governor, Jerry Brown, will approve the bill.

Supporters of Net Neutrality protest the FCC's recent decision to repeal the program in Los Angeles, California, November 28, 2017.

Before SB 822's passage, net neutrality advocates spotted robocalls being made to senior citizens to try and convince them to speak up against internet protections like the ones in the bill.

Having cleared both houses of California's legislature, SB 822 will now head to Democratic Gov. They call it a bailout of Pacific Gas & Electric company.
