Donald Trump announces lawyer Don McGahn is leaving via Twitter
Trump praised McGahn on Wednesday afternoon as an "excellent guy", adding that he has "a lot of affection for Don".
White House Counsel Don McGahn, a consequential insider in President Donald Trump's legal storms and successes and a key figure in the administration's handling of the Russian Federation investigation, will be leaving in the fall, the president announced Wednesday.
"Worked with Don for a long time and truly appreciate his service", Trump said.
The Timesreported in January that Trump ordered Mueller to be fired in June, 2017, but McGahn threatened to quit, and the president backed down. McGahn has been the pipeline for recommendations to Trump; it's not clear that he will be replaced by anyone half as effective.
What to know about White House Counsel Don McGahn and why he's making headlines when it comes to Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, (R), tweeted that he hopes "it's not true" that McGahn is leaving and urged Trump to not "let that happen".
But Mr McGahn was well-liked in Washington DC, with Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley lamenting his departure.
Other topics included Mr Trump's comments regarding Attorney-General Jeff Sessions, a frequent target of critical tweets from the President, and the possibility of firing Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the probe, the Post said.
McGahn has served an important role in the Trump administration due to his leadership on the nomination and confirmation of federal judges, including Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch's confirmation.
McGahn met with investigators for 30 hours this year, according to the reports, and may have provided them with information about key episodes related to the FBI's inquiry into possible obstruction of justice on the part of the president.
Before joining the White House, McGahn was chief counsel to the Trump campaign. McGahn's warning to the President was first reported by the New York Times and denied by Trump, who called it "fake news". McGahn had chose to stay on to lead the confirmation process of Kavanaugh, according to sources.
Trump insisted at the time that his general counsel wasn't a "RAT" and accused Mueller's team of "looking for trouble".
