UK urged to stand with United States against Iran by Woody Johnson

Accusing Iran of "squandering its money on proxy wars and malign activities overseas", US Ambassador Woody Johnson's op-ed in the Sunday Telegraph asked the UK to "use its considerable diplomatic power and influence" to join the US "as a united front" in its effort to secure "a genuinely comprehensive agreement" on Iran ending its nuclear program.

But last week members of the European Union reiterated their desire to remain in the deal and even moved to protect other countries that continue doing business with Iran despite U.S. sanctions that threatens to punish them.

Majid Takht-e Ravanchi, a member of the presidency's political bureau, told the semi-official ISNA news agency on Friday that Iranians have no expectations from Trump after he pulled America out of the landmark nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers. "We are asking global Britain to use its considerable diplomatic power and influence and join us as we lead a concerted global effort toward a genuinely comprehensive agreement".

"Until then, America is turning up the pressure and we want the United Kingdom by our side", Johnson wrote in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. The UK's trade with Iran was £365million in 2016.

"It is clear that the danger from Iran did not diminish in the wake of the deal", he said.

A week ago Britain signed on to a joint statement with other EU countries that pledged to press on with a strategy to lessen the impact of the USA sanctions on European businesses.

US Ambassador to Britain Woody Johnson criticized Tehran for funding "proxy wars and malign activities" instead of investing in its economy.

In the latest threat to the US-UK special relationship, the US' top diplomat in Britain has called on London to back its pressure on Iran, warning of "serious consequences" for businesses who flaunt Washington's sanctions.

"In general, sanctions are unjust", he said.

While Washington was busy exiting the Iran nuclear deal in early May, Rabat had its own issues with the Islamic Republic. In June during the acrimonious G-7 meeting, held in Charlevoix, Quebec, which broke up amid highly personal recriminations between Trump and fellow summiteers over trade tariffs, May appeared especially eager to keep a low profile.
