How to watch the longest 'blood moon' eclipse of the century
27 July 2018, 10:31 | Brenda Erickson
Don't miss tomorrow's Blood Moon — the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century
The Earth's shadow appears red because of its atmosphere. Because the Earth passes between the sun and the moon during this cosmic event, the light of the sun has to pass through our planet's atmosphere, casting a shadow on the moon.
During a total lunar eclipse, the moon takes on its ghostly red pallor because of the Earth's shadow.
"The moon is not always in flawless alignment with the sun and the Earth, so that is why we do not get a lunar eclipse every lunar cycle", Brad Tucker, an astronomer with the Australian National University's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, said in a statement. This is the same reason sunsets appear pink or red. The Moon will rise in a totally-eclipsed state and we will see about three quarters of the total phase of the eclipse. The eclipse will already have started by the time the Moon rises over the United Kingdom and Western Europe.
Fearing the jaguar would come down to earth to continue its assault, people would throw spears at the moon and create noise to scare it away.
On Saturday, July 28, the total lunar eclipse will begin at 1 am.
"This total lunar eclipse will be primarily visible from the world's Eastern Hemisphere, which are Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand".
Dr Edward Bloomer, also an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, said: "Although Mars being in opposition is a regular event, the elliptical orbits of the planets mean the distance between them can vary quite a bit".

The skies across most of France are set to be mostly clear for Friday's lunar eclipse.
According to QCH experts lunar eclipses can be seen with naked eye unlike solar eclipses, which need to be looked at using eclipse glass or filters. It will be 15 times brighter than the next brightest star in the sky.
The American space agency NASA says the moon will move into the Earth's shadow on Friday night.
On the same day as the eclipse, the planet Mars will be at its brightest as it travels close to Earth. "But, it will reach closest to the earth on 31 July, when it will appear the brightest since 2003", said a ministry of earth sciences official. So if bad weather disrupts your opportunity on Friday, there will be more chances. The live stream will begin at approximately 1 p.m.
Strong, severe thunderstorms expected Tuesday afternoon
The main impact from these storms will be very heavy, torrential downpours, potentially causing some localized flash flooding. Sunshine and warm temperatures once again in the forecast today with highs topping out in the upper 80's to mid 90's.
First look at Olivia Colman as the Queen in 'The Crown'
I always knew it was only going to be two series and then the part would be reincarnated and someone else takes over. We simply can not wait. "I will miss all of the creative people who will go on creating this program", she said.
