Palestinian teenager killed in Gaza border protests
He said the escalation was the result of the sustained Hamas rocket attacks, its fomenting of violence along the border and its campaign of launching incendiary kites and balloons that have devastated Israeli farmlands and nature reserves. The IDF said dozens of rockets had been fired on Israel from within Gaza. The Israeli raids on Saturday involved the "largest daytime operation" carried out by its air force in Gaza since a war in 2014, Israel´s military spokesman Jonathan Conricus told journalists. The military said it identified about 60 launches of rockets and mortars from Gaza toward Israeli territory, of which about 10 were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system.
"The immediate dealing with the escalation of the enemy and the immediate response reflects the status of the militants' awareness in running and ruling the conflict, sending a clear message and guaranteeing the balance of fast deterrence and this is done to force the enemy to stop escalation", said Barhoum. Israeli military officials say the weekend attacks on Gaza were retaliation for that casualty, and that it was "sufficient reason to go on the offensive".
The Palestinian resistance in the strip responded by firing rockets towards Gaza envelope settlements. The IDF said it had struck facilities used by Hamas, which dominates Gaza, including a battalion headquarters in Beit Lahia, a training camp located in a high-rise building in the al-Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza, weapons storage facilities and rocket launchers.
Adnan Abu Amer, a political analyst from Gaza, wrote on his Facebook page "tug-of-war still exists between the Palestinian resistance and Israel until it reaches the cutting point or someone comes along and stops this risky game".
Israel says it has only opened fire in self-defence or on people trying to infiltrate its territory under the cover of the demonstrations.
In addition, the arson balloons and kites from Gaza have caused 750 fires and burned 2,600 hectares, leading to hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, according to Israel's fire service.
Earlier Saturday, Gaza Health Ministry said that 18-year-old Mohamed Shurab from the southern Gaza Strip city of Kahn Younis died of wounds early on Saturday morning.
An Egyptian-mediated ceasefire appeared to have ended a 24-hour round of fighting with Hamas militants that had threatened to escalate into another all-out war.
Two teenagers were killed and several others were wounded when Israel struck an unfinished five-story building near a Hamas security compound and a public park in Gaza City, reducing the structure to rubble.
