Kavanaugh's nomination is sure to ignite a partisan fight heading into this fall's midterm elections, and the potential for a rightward tilt has progressive groups and women's health care organizations anxious about the future of reproductive rights, including Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that guaranteed women access to abortion. By your understanding, what were the legal principles that guided him in that case? Four states - North Dakota, South Dakota, Mississippi, and Louisiana - would automatically ban abortions. Between 1970 and the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, the situation was that many women of some means travelled to NY for abortions while women of less means continued to die from performing their own or having them botched by others.
The prior positions on health care cases by Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's pick for the Supreme Court, hint at his potential future positions if confirmed to the court. One of these will have to succeed in persuading the majority of the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade in order for further measures to be taken against it. He frequently sided with conservatives to uphold abortion restrictions.
"We do not have a New York State law that provides the protections of Roe v. Wade".
"It's clear our constitutional right to access abortion is on the line".

A regime air strike on the rebel-held half of the provincial capital of Daraa also killed one civilian, the Observatory said. The deal will take place in phases across Deraa, but there is no timeline yet, a rebel official said.
At the same time, 21 states adopted 58 measures previous year meant to expand access to women's reproductive health care services. In some states, abortion would still be on-demand and paid for by the government.
As I've said, the most interesting thing to me about what Kavanaugh had to say was that his wife is a West Texan, graduated from high school in Abilene, Texas, and then was a graduate of the University of Texas. "And the New York State law is in the criminal code", Cuomo said. Some states may prohibit abortions following detection of a fetal heartbeat.
Some have been formally blocked by the courts, but not repealed.
Debora McDell-Hernandez, of Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York, said Kavanaugh has not just ruled to limit access to abortion, but access to birth control.
Meanwhile, pro-life leaders say they are excited about Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. Now the only question is whether these senators will stand up and fight for women and families or be a rubber stamp on Trump's agenda.
The cases fall into three major categories. But there are five other states with 72-hour waiting periods in place, and the majority of states have waiting periods ranging from 18 hours to more than 72 hours, according to the Guttmacher Institute. An appeals court recently shot down the lawsuit, but the insurers are expected to file for a re-hearing in a case with implications for more than $12 billion in federal payments.
Whenever a president nominates a Supreme Court justice, you can guarantee a backlash from their political opponents. When pressed for his opinion on that case, he responded, "The Supreme Court is held repeatedly Senator, and I don't think it would be appropriate for me to give a personal view on that case". "That would be binding precedent of the court", he said.
As Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination tees up another national debate about reproductive rights, is it too much to ask that abortion's impact on the black population be part of the discussion?
