The Porsche Taycan Electric sports car will be coming to India
Porsche is pursuing a three-pronged approach coinciding with the looming technology shift by introducing fully electric cars like the Taycan, developed under the project code name Mission E;plug-in hybrids; and combustion-engine vehicles that root back to the first 356.
The Taycan is the first in a line of electric cars to be launched by Porsche. The electric sports vehicle is expected to go on sale at the end of 2019.
Porsche has previously said the Taycan will cost about the same as a Panamera, which means it will go head to head with Tesla's Model S, delivering over 600bhp of electric power with 4WD, promising 0-62mph in well under 3.5 seconds and 0-124mph in under 12.0 seconds.
The Porsche Taycan will be launched in India in early 2020
In terms of range, the target is for the Porsche Taycan cover upwards of 300 miles on a single charge and Porsche says the 800-volt system can take on 62 miles of charge in just 4 minutes - assuming you have access to the necessary high powered charging facilities.
Porsche's upcoming first electric sedan has a new name.
The Taycan has been dubbed the "Tesla-slayer" by some automotive journalists. Porsche claims a maximum range of over 500 km for the Tesla Model S rival.
The Mission E concept generates almost 600bhp via a lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, one on each axle.
Interest in the Taycan has already been huge, Porsche says, though sales aren't expected to kick off in the U.S. for some time yet. Range will reportedly be over 500km under the NEDC testing scheme, although we're holding our breath to hear how that range looks under WLTP. With the lack of charging infrastructure, the chances of the Taycan coming to India anytime soon are nearly non-existent.
The Taycan is the start of a broader electrification strategy at Porsche. Up until then, Porsche had provided engineering services for auto manufacturers.
The company says it plans to invest more than 6 billion euros (a bit more than $7 billion) in EVs over the next four years, doubling the investment it had originally planned.
