Red Bull's Max Verstappen pipped Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes in first practice at the Canadian Grand Prix. Vettel's best lap time of one minute 10.776 seconds bested the record of 1:11.459 set past year by Mercedes ace Lewis Hamilton. Thanks to the team; thanks for fixing the auto yesterday after I hit the wall a little bit. The vehicle has been working really well and we know in qualifying we are missing top speed.
After a strong weekend, Max Verstappen was unable to replicate his pace from the previous three practice sessions and had to settle for the third row on the grid, his lap however still impressive. So, great to carry momentum we've had in qualifying so far this year, even though the last race was a little bit less so.
Meanwhile, qualifying didn't start as planned for Romain Grosjean. We did the best we could with it.
Hamilton was third in first qualifying, fifth in second qualifying and fourth after the first runs in the top 10 shoot-out.
When asked if he felt Red Bull had the pace for pole after seeing teammate Daniel Ricciardo go quickest in Q2, he said: "I knew we had a good auto, but I wanted to wait and see how competitive we would be in Q3".
"We have the B-spec engine this weekend, the upgrade, and I think just configuring a few things on that, we're not necessarily aligned, so we just had to go through a little bit of trial and error".
"I guess the fight will be with Ferrari, too early to really know, but I'm sure Mercedes will be really fast tomorrow afternoon".
Despite his hard start to the season, Verstappen is often praised for being one of the exciting drivers and prospects in Formula 1, with many believing he's a champion waiting for his chance. Grosjean failed to set a lap, while Ericsson limped back to his Sauber garage with terminal damage.
And then a quick new track record for Vettel, knocking spots off the Mercedes with 1:10.776.
