DHS chief seems to disagree on Putin backing Trump

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Tuesday she was unaware of any intelligence assessment concluding that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election to aid President Donald Trump's campaign, even though the intelligence community concluded just that over a year ago.

"I do not believe that I've seen that conclusion that the specific intent was to help President Trump win", Nielsen said today.

In a subsequent answer, Nielsen said she believed that Russian Federation did and will continue to try to "manipulate Americans' perspective on a whole variety of issues". She also very clearly articulated today that the Russian government unequivocally worked to undermine our democracy during the 2016 election.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says his hopes for improved relations with the United States under President Donald Trump are all but dashed. "Russian goals included undermining faith in the USA democratic process and harming a candidate's electability and potential presidency".

Nielsen met with House members in a closed-door briefing on election security, which included updates from Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats and FBI Director Christopher A. Wray.

"That the specific intent was to help President Trump win I am not aware of that.", Nielsen said.

So far, she said, the department has not seen evidence that Russian Federation is trying to meddle in any particular races this year. Though House Intelligence Committee Republicans wrote in a report that the intelligence community had not followed its own best practices when it determined that Russian Federation was trying to help Trump, the Senate Intelligence Committee released interim findings this month that agreed entirely with the intelligence community.

Despite the well-publicized and unambiguous assessment, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Tuesday told a group of reporters, "I don't believe I have seen that conclusion". Nielsen said she was unaware of that assessment, which has been public for over a year. So I think what they're trying to do, in my opinion, and I defer to the intel community, is just disrupt our belief and our own understanding of what's happening.
