GETTYLabour could get its best London results in 40 years
Some media commentators said the two big parties, Conservative and Labor, were deadlocked, but both prime minister Theresa May and main opposition Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn hailed the results for their respective parties.
Neither party deserved to make a major breakthrough. In this respect, it's too early to say whether this is Peak May and Peak Corbyn as some suggest - Brexit, the biggest uncertainty of all, is very much still in play. Corbyn successfully parked the issue at last year's general election, with Labour attracting support from people who voted Remain in 2016.
No clear party victor has emerged following Thursday's local elections in England, according to a BBC News report on Saturday.
However, they lost the southwestern city of Plymouth to Labour and lost control of Trafford, its flagship council in northern England.
"We set out with the objective of holding our ground, winning one or two councils and making a bridgehead in many other places". Both the important boroughs of Wandsworth and Westminster were held by the Conservatives.
Guardian columnist Owen Jones, who helped organise numerous events, noted that while Labour did not gain overall control of the councils they campaigned for, many saw an increase in the number of councillors elected.
Although the council remains in no overall control, leader Patrick Harley said he was confident he would receive the necessary support to remain in charge.
Labour lawmaker Cat Smith said Britain had seen few cases of fraud at polling stations and the proposals were "a sledgehammer to crack a nut".
Umunna, a long standing critic of the current Labor leadership, added: "From a Labor point of view there needs to be a proper post-mortem - I think the National Executive Committee should appoint somebody to do that - on this result". Many claim that had the vote share been the same at a general election, we would be facing a hung parliament.
Mr Corbyn's party lost Nuneaton and Bedworth - an area that often indicates the colour of the government at general elections - as well as Derby and fell short of gaining control in areas like Swindon, Dudley and Walsall, where they had hoped to establish middle England strongholds.
May was punished right across the country in a general election last summer, losing her parliamentary majority after a campaign that alienated core voters with unpopular social policy and saw her style criticised as robotic and impersonal. She did that a year ago, and lost her overall majority in the House of Commons.
Labour council leaders also have to take their share of responsibility where results don't go as we would wish.

I think he's doing a good job and he's playing the game the way he should, the way he needs to to be a really effective player. Nicklas Backstrom wrapped up the scoring with his third goal of the playoffs on an empty netter with seven seconds remaining.
Mrs. May's problems over a withdrawal are coming to a head over her promise to leave Europe's customs union, which guarantees tariff-free trade with Continental Europe.
The leader of the minority Liberal Democrats, Sir Vince Cable said he was delighted with the gains his party made in Thursday's election.
Coun. White added: "Now we are in control we will be looking at how to tackle the education divide in the borough, and seeing how we can reduce the number of homes being built on our greenbelt land".
UKIP has suffered leadership issues and struggled for a new goal since achieving its primary political aim at the 2016 Brexit referendum when Britons chose to leave the EU.
Rosemary Carroll, who made a post comparing an Asian with a dog last June, rejoined "as the votes were being counted" on Friday, giving the Tories narrow control of Pendle council in Lancashire.

Receivers Marcell Ateman and Chris Lacy, and safety Tre Flowers are among the OSU players who could be targeted on Saturday. Rudolph was projected as a fringe first round draft pick whose status as an Air Raid quarterback would limit his appeal.
