Gennady Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan final press conference quotes
By matching Bernard Hopkins' record of 20 consecutive middleweight title fights without a loss, Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 knockouts) let it be known he "absolutely" wants Canelo Alvarez next on September 15.
Gennady Golovkin has plans to clean out the entire middleweight division after defeating Vanes Martirosyan on Saturday night at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California.
It took the 36-year-old Golovkin just two rounds to finish Martirosyan, who was fighting for the first time in almost two years.
Martirosyan was a short-notice opponent after Golovkin's highly-anticipated rematch with Canelo Alvarez was called off after the latter was suspended for two failed drug tests for clenbuterol in February.
The IBF has behaved the most foolishly, refusing to put its title on the line for Martirosyan and then declaring Golovkin will be stripped if he doesn't take on mandatory challenger Sergey Derevyanchenko - a 32-year-old Ukrainian with a paltry 12 professional bouts - by early August.
Originally, the 36-year-old Golovkin was supposed to have a rematch with Alvarez on Saturday. The fight was over at 1:53 of the second round.
"In looking at some of the tapes - I have followed him since I have other fighters at 154", Sanchez said this week. The question has been answered, with two-time light middleweight title challenger Vanes Martirosyan stepping up to fill the vacancy.
Tying the record will be part of Golovkin's legacy, but the more immediate concern is whether the Alvarez suspension and subsequent cancellation of their fight will have a negative impact on Golovkin's performance against Martirosyan.
However, the second round was one way traffic, as Golovkin unleashed a succession of rapid fire punches. "It's the hardest I've ever been hit".
With the win, Golovkin has equalled the record of 20 successful defences of the middleweight belts, previously set by Bernard Hopkins.
Ronny Jackson Returns to White House Medical Unit
The records also say the White House medical unit Jackson ran successfully passed regular controlled substance audits. The president later called for Tester to resign for what he said are allegations that remain unconfirmed.
Even though he will be moving up to 160-pounds for the first time, the younger Martirosyan believes it will be a huge boost for him going into the fight.
Just a few weeks before he got the fight, Martirosyan said he asked his wife who her favorite boxer was beside him.
On a night he'd hoped would be the crowning achievement of his career, when he figured he'd make an eight-figure purse and definitively establish himself as the best middleweight in the world, Golovkin essentially had to settle for a tune-up.
Months of promoting the much-hyped rematch went for naught. Nine years.I have 11 belts. I challenge anyone to come and take my belts. "Whenever there was a catchweight in my career, I always did better".
Not only did Gennady Golovkin have to face a new opponent, but the venue of the fight and its viewing status was altered. He meant to spend it under Las Vegas' brightest lights as he proved his middleweight supremacy in a lucrative rematch with Canelo Alvarez.
