You Won't Believe That World's Top 15 Most Polluted Cities Out of 20 Are Exist in India, Kanpur is on Number 1
According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, 14 Indian cities are among the world's 20 most polluted, with Dehli making no progress in tackling its pollution problem.
With an average PM2.5 level of 138, Lucknow has become one of the most polluted cities in the world, and this is nothing to be proud of! We are all breathing in highly polluted air, which needs to be checked right away.
"The reason behind the increasing pollution in smaller cities like Jodhpur or Alwar is double trouble caused by increasing number of vehicles coupled with dust which is already existing in these cities,"said Vivek Chattopadhyaya, Senior Programme Manager (Air Pollution Control) at Centre for Science and Environment (CSE)".
Covering more than 4,300 cities in 108 countries, the data points to an estimated 4.2 million deaths each year caused by outdoor air pollution, with 3.8 million fatalities overall, owing to household pollutants, linked to cooking.
As per the ambient air quality report released by the in 2017, Lucknow had "good quality air" just for 17 days. The worldwide standards of air pollution says that index value of 0-50 (micrograms per cubic metre air) is excellent, 51-100 is good, 101-150 is lightly polluted.
It said the World Health Organization recognises air pollution is a critical risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), causing an estimated 24 per cent of all adult deaths from heart disease, 25 per cent from stroke, 43 per cent from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 29 per cent from lung cancer.
The WHO says as many as 9 out of 10 people across the world breathe unhealthy air.
The Indian capital has struggled to apply measures to clean its air over the last few years. "It is unacceptable that over 3 billion people - a lot of them women and children - are still breathing deadly smoke every day from using polluting stoves and fuels in their homes", said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of WHO.
"Air pollution does not recognise borders".
But it seems the Indian government could also improve its efforts to fight air pollution.
