Amazon plans to add 2,000 workers to its research and development office in Boston, the company announced Tuesday, confirming reports that the retailer would move into a new waterfront complex in the city.

"It's great news for Boston that Amazon is expanding its footprint in the Seaport, bringing new jobs and economic opportunities to our city", said Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh. CBC Canada is reporting the 3,000 new positions will be focused on e-commerce technology, cloud computing, and machine learning.

"Vancouver is home to an incredibly talented and diverse workforce, and these thousands of new employees will invent on behalf of our customers worldwide", Alexandre Gagnon, vice president of Amazon Canada and Mexico, said. Aside from the most obvious way Amazon could make money through Alexa, ordering items from the Amazon.com eCommerce platform, the team has been developing new areas. But other sites are being considered as well, including one in the neighboring city of Somerville.

Amazon's new office in Boston's Seaport District will create 2,000 tech jobs in the city. However, this latest expansion is focused on its Vancouver tech hub and is created to foster more innovation and technical creativity. To date, more than 16,000 Amazonians have utilized the job-retraining programs globally.

Dougherty says the current structure's architectural features will be preserved, and the tower is expected to open in 2022. However, the loss of skilled foreign workers at tech companies in the US just adds to Canada's growing importance as a go-to country for technology and innovation.

Amazon first opened offices in MA in 2011.

Amazon already has more than 3,000 workers in MA. But Amazon is hiring aggressively in cities all over the world.
