Suspect in Golden State killer case a former police officer is arrested after decades of searching

The "Golden State Killer" was one of California's most feared serial killers and rapists in the 1970s and 1980s, responsible for at least 12 murders and upwards of 50 rapes, plus more than a hundred burglaries.

The Golden State Killer, also known as the East Area Rapist, the Original Night Stalker and the Diamond Knot Killer, is believed to have killed at least 12 people, raped at least 45 victims and burglarized hundreds of homes in the Sacramento area, Central Valley, Bay Area and Southern California, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Some of the alleged crimes overlapped with his time as a police officer in Auburn, California, officials said. He was previously employed as a police officer in Auburn and Exeter, and interned with the Roseville Police Department after graduating from Sacramento State.

"It was apparent from the start this was a very unstable household", he said. She said the homicide gave her the chance to overcome the past while honoring her dad's memory.

"This is the greatest gift ever", Wardlow said of the arrest.

Investigators believe he was committing the crimes while he was an officer.

DeAngelo retired last year after 27 years working in a local supermarket warehouse. He retired a year ago.

"None of his actions in the workplace would have lead us to suspect any connection to crimes being attributed to him", said Victoria Castro, a spokesperson for Save Mart.

Despite an outpouring of thousands of tips over the years, DeAngelo's name had not been on the radar of law enforcement before last week, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said. DeAngelo will face the death penalty or life without parole if convicted of the Orange County charges. He's being held without bail in Sacramento and will be arraigned Friday.

Authorities have a list of items stolen from victims' homes as well as other items connected to crimes, including weapons.

A newspaper article from when Joseph DeAngelo became a police officer. Neighbors claim that he was not "creepy", but he kept to himself in such an odd way. "My sister reminded me that when we were kids and we walked by the fence, he would yell at us because he thought we were looking in his yard".

Jane Carson-Sandler, 72, was a nursing student when the Golden State Killer attacked her in 1976. After tying up both her and her child, he raped her. But a neighbor said that from the day Sharon Huddle moved into the upscale suburb of Sacramento with her three young daughters in 1997, there was always trouble. "I don't want him to be dead because I think that would be an easy way out for him". Eighteen more women were raped between March 1978 and October 1979 in Northern California.

A spokeswoman for the corporate painted a special image from what neighbors instructed the Bee about DeAngelo's demeanor. The crimes continued across the state until 1986.

It was discarded DNA that confirmed, "We had our man", Jones said at a news conference Wednesday. He lived not far from where some of the crimes occurred. First he struck in the foothills east of Sacramento, raping at least 46 women, before he began killing and headed south. Police only had minor details about his looks, along with a sketch from a near-victim. This year, a book and a series from HLN came out in the hopes of shedding more light on it.

In the video, Belli describes the terror that was unleashed in the late 1970s during a string of rapes in the Sacramento area. But by 1977, the list of victims had expanded to couples in their homes. Over the years, the killer also was possibly captured in two voice recordings, police believe. Police termed this acronym in 2001 after DNA results determined that the East Area Rapist (EARS), and the Original Night Stalker (ONS) were the same person.
