Syria's Assad poised for another huge symbolic victory
An inner rift among the Islam Army rebels in the Syrian capital Damascus' Eastern Ghouta countryside has delayed their planned evacuation on Thursday, state news agency SANA reported.
Jaish al-Islam is the last remaining rebel group in Eastern Ghouta but has repeatedly denied agreeing to leave the area. Under the deal, Syrian state media said Jaish Al Islam would hand over heavy and medium-sized weapons and acknowledge the restoration of the Damascus government's control of Douma.
Thousands of rebels, their families and other civilians have already departed other parts of eastern Ghouta for Idlib province, another insurgent-held area of northern Syria.
The deal struck between the group and the Russian military marks the end of a weeks-long push by the Syrian government to consolidate its control of the suburbs.
