A US Air Force Thunderbirds pilot has been killed as his F-16 jet crashed at Nellis Air Force Base outside of Las Vegas, on Wednesday. Its pilot ejected and has been reported in stable condition. The pilot was not immediately identified, pending next-of-kin notification.

The Thunderbirds have canceled their upcoming weekend appearance at March Reserve Base in California.

This is the 2nd incident involving a Thunderbird plane in a year. The pilot and his passenger were hospitalized with injuries after the incident.

On June 23, 2017, Thunderbird #08 ran off a wet runway and overturned at Dayton International Airport in OH while rehearsing for an air show.

A Thunderbird also crashed after a flyover over a graduation ceremony at Air Force Academy in 2016.

It is the second plane crash at Nellis Air Force Base in a matter of months following a non-fatal crash in January.

Air Force Lt. Col. Kevin Walsh, who was already a member of the Thunderbirds team, was later named the team's commander.
