Nvidia Pauses Self-Driving Testing After Uber Crash
NVIDIA (NVDA) shares tumbled at midday on Tuesday after Reuters said the company was suspending its autonomous driving tests.
No matter how much you test a self-driving vehicle, it isn't enough.
The importance of safety with autonomous vehicles was highlighted last week; Ubersuspended its driverless vehicle testing in Tempe, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Toronto, when a female pedestrian died after being struck by an Uber auto operating in autonomous mode in Tempe, Arizona.
Evidently Nvidia, along with the other firms that have adopted its Drive PX autonomous driving suite for their auto autos, will now have even more time on their hands to road-test the Drive Constellation.
"This is a big problem, so we're really focused on bringing the hardware and software to solve the challenge", he said. Nvidia's stock fell 6.6 percent to $228.31 at 2:44 pm in NY after earlier falling as low as $225.77.
In other news, Director Mark L. Perry sold 17,307 shares of the business's stock in a transaction on Monday, February 12th. For example, as an early contributor and Open Compute Project (OCP) solution provider, Penguin Computing was recently awarded a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) tri-laboratory program to provide NVIDIATesla Volta-based GPU systems.
Nvidia CEO and founder Jensen Huang demonstrated the platform during his keynote on Tuesday, and announced the availability of Drive Constellation by the third quarter of this year.
The company said its computer system will help provide self-driving hardware with enough virtual experience in risky and hard situations to become proficient in the real world. Penguin Computing products include Linux-based servers; software; integrated, turn-key clusters; enterprise-grade storage and bare metal HPC on cloud via Penguin Computing® On-Demand™ (POD). The Company's operates through two segments: GPU and Tegra Processor. Huang explained that the numbers are against on-the-road testing. But a fleet of 20 test cars can only cover a million miles per year. Worldwide human beings drive about 10 trillion miles a year. "The amount of scenario coverage is just not possible in real life".
NVIDIA stock traded down $5.03 on Wednesday, hitting $220.49.
Nvidia said its computer system will help provide self-driving hardware with enough virtual experience in unsafe and hard situations to become proficient in the real world. That mainly consists of revenue from infotainment and development agreements for self-driving cars. There are too many situations the artificial intelligence system has to train for and not enough testing time on the highways. It would appear there is a significant speed bump along that particular road.
The testing may be taking place in a virtual environment, but it's happening on the same hardware and software that would be found in a self-driving vehicle, Nvidia's Danny Shapiro explained in a briefing.
"We can train at sunset for 24 hours, creating these blinding conditions that would only happen for a few minutes", Shapiro said.
John Kavanagh predicted UFC 223 headliner would fall apart
Ferguson is out of the equation and loses his interim lightweight belt, a crushing blow for a man riding a 10-fight win streak. The UFC has tried to pair Ferguson and Nurmagomedov on four occasions, all of which have fallen through for various reasons.
He said that the US has 770 accidents per billion miles. Alphabet Inc's Waymo, the leading driverless auto company, developed its own virtual-testing environment years ago.
