North Korea's Kim Jong Un to meet with South Korean president at border

North & South Korea set April 27 as date for leaders' summit in breakthrough move

After a much vapid war of words between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the USA president this month agreed to an invitation to meet from Jong-un.

The efforts culminated in a revised pact the two countries announced this week that gives USA automakers and pharmaceuticals more access to the South Korean market.

"We swiftly removed potential conflicts between the two countries at a time when close cooperation between South Korea and the United States is more important than ever", a second senior Blue House official said. The previous two meetings, both of which had political and economic issues on the agenda, were held in 2000 and 2007.

"We will closely consult with the North to make the inter-Korean summit, which is scheduled for late April, a success", South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-Gyon said.

"Trump does not separate security from trade; they are all part of his pack of cards, while Moon tended to see them as separate issues", said Shim Sang-ryul, a professor of global trade at Kwangwoon University in Seoul. The Koreas plan to hold another preparatory meeting Wednesday to discuss security, protocol and media coverage matters, according to a statement released by the countries.

There have so far been no specific callouts for apparel and textiles in this amended agreement, but South Korea's exports in the category have slid almost 5 percent year-over-year, with totals in January down to $68.5 million. And were moving along very nicely with North Korea. He also issued a clear and tough reminder that Washington will not deviate from the policy of using "a big stick".

Seoul has agreed to double the number cars each U.S. automaker can export annually to South Korea as well as reducing the safety standards on those cars. All parties are expected to discuss the denuclearization of North Korea.

A summit between Kim and President Donald Trump is also anticipated by the end of May.

Mr Trump wrote on Twitter he had received a message from Mr Xi on Tuesday night that his meeting with Mr Kim "went very well" and that Mr Kim looked forward to meeting the United States president.

The UN has repeatedly hit North Korea with sanctions, supported nearly unanimously, regarding Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs. The Sino-Russian proposal, firmly rejected by the USA, seeks a simultaneous suspension of both nuclear tests by the North and the large-scale Seoul-Washington drills.

Greeting the South Korean officials at the North Korean-controlled Tongilgak building, Ri said the past 80 days have been filled with "unprecedented historic events" between the rivals, referring to the resumption of dialogue between the Koreas before the Winter Olympics in the South and the agreement to hold a summit.
