Kenyan president, opposition leader call truce

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga promised on Friday to unite the country after elections past year in which around 100 people were killed mainly in clashes between opposition supporters and security forces.

The controversial MP of Parliament who has over the years locked horns with Ruto over a myriad of political issues, declared that he will not mind if President Kenyatta will appoint Odinga to the government.

Both leaders shook hands to signal their commitment to ending a political stalemate that has worsened ethnic and sectarian divisions in Kenya thus eroding its status as a regional economic powerhouse. "What the country prays is that the unity will hold so that the county can move forward", said Ngeno.

The rare meeting of scions of Kenya's founding fathers elicited mixed reactions but there was a common feeling of optimism.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has praised the "positive step" taken by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Addressing the press in Mombasa on Saturday, the Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader said the agreement between the two didn't reflect the wishes of the Nasa coalition nor the interest of all Kenyans.

On his part, Odinga vowed to be at the frontline to restore healing in Kenya.

In a statement issued barely hours after photos of the Kenyatta-Raila meeting were circulated, Miguna - now in Canada, said he rejected Odinga's betrayal of the People of Kenya.

"We refuse to be the leaders under whose watch Kenyans lead into a failed nation. The Kalenjin leaders differences has divided the community into at least three blocks", said Ngeno.

Kenyatta, for his part, said during the meeting that the solid friendship and cooperation that continues to deepen, only serves to encourage Kenya to strengthen its resolve to work together with the US toward an even brighter future, the statement said. "Our only option is to come together and begin the process of healing", he added.

In other words, the "reconciliation" between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila is a fundamental betrayal of the hundreds of innocent Kenyans who have lost their lives fighting for democracy and in defence of Raila Odinga's stolen electoral victories of 2007, 2013 and 2017.
