10 March 2018, 01:27 | Louis Holland
Reminder: Change clock and check alarm batteries this weekend
Daylight saving time begins Sunday, March 11, and clocks are turned an hour forward. Volunteers will help families understand the importance of fire safety and help them develop personalized family escape plans to use in the event a fire breaks out in their home.
While changing the batteries, check for the age of each alarm; smoke and carbon monoxide alarms don't last forever.
You should check them every month to make sure the batteries are good and you should change the batteries every 6 months.
Jason Keeling, American Red Cross said, "Around 39 people died in 2017 in West Virginia because their smoke alarms didn't work".
Additionally, the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends replacing smoke alarms every 10 years.
Newer models of smoke alarms have long-lasting batteries that do not need to be replaced, but thousands of homeowners still use models that use standard batteries that must be replaced regularly. For best protection, smoke alarms should be installed inside and outside sleeping rooms.
