Major Nor'easter revs up over East Coast

CTY-WeatherAccident02p-3

The Coast Guard was prepping for flooding and vicious seas from the mid-Atlantic through the Northeast as a powerful storm bearing hurricane-force gusts began plowing into the region.

Southwest cancelled 10 flights, including one of Los Angeles. There's been a lot of rain over southern New England this month, and the ground is softening up.

A sudden pressure plummet on Friday is expected to hit the Atlantic coast leading into Saturday, CNN reported.

In Washington, wind gusts exceeding 50 and 60 miles per hour have been reported at airports. The airport in Northern Virginia has runways that are more closely aligned with the gusty winds that were kicked up Friday by the nor'easter.

Trump is heading Friday to North Carolina for the Rev. Billy Graham's funeral.

Because the storm will be taking a very slow path just south of New England there will be elements of heavy rain pouring in off the ocean.

One of the biggest challenges of the forecast is the changeover to wet snow, both timing it and determines how much will accumulate.

However, US President Donald Trump's refusal to recertify the deal has injected uncertainty into those sales. Aseman Airlines spokesman Mohammad Taghi Tabatabai told state TV that all on board Flight EP3704 were killed.

Amtrak also announced it had suspended train service between NY and Boston. Some roads were blocked by downed trees.

Next are the high winds, with high wind warnings in effect for most of the area for later Friday morning into early Saturday morning. The Smithsonian museums also shut its doors.

About 1,500 flights involving United States airports are canceled, Flight tracking website FlightAware.com posted Friday.

A nor'easter officially hit the US East Coast on Friday morning, and is expected to affect coastal cities from Georgia to Maine.

Inland New England is more likely to get snow, with a foot possible in upstate NY and western MA. Maryland had over 30,000 customers without power early Friday morning. Stewart lost power Thursday night. Most of the snow impacts will occur in the mountains with generally light accumulations expected. As this snow comes through, winds will pick up, and- you guessed it- blowing and drifting snow will be an issue.

When Might We See Snow?

He acknowledged being exhausted coming off the West Coast Swing, but posted his lowest career round at PGA National on Thursday. The difficulty was the wind, which blew hard not just in the morning but also the afternoon. "It's a strong test out there".

The heaviest snow will fall in western NY into northern Pennsylvania and into western MA, where some areas could see 1 to 2 feet. Coastal flooding at the Battery or in the subways is not expected. In Scituate, Massachusetts, officials asked residents in flooded areas to evacuate.

In parts of northeastern Pennsylvania, where heavy, wet snow has fallen, vehicle and truck crashes have closed sections of major roads, including Interstate 81. The Boston Globe reports 1,855 people alerted Scituate officials that they had evacuated.

Residents are taking precautions to protect their homes and businesses.

"I've never seen anything like that", the 50-year-old resident said.

Lighter snowfall - from 2 to 5 inches - was expected from Boston through Rhode Island. Police rescued many people in partially submerged and trapped cars.

The bomb cyclone nor'easter that arrived in the Northeast on Friday brought snow, inches of rain and high winds with it.
