Kratom supplements have a new side effect: Salmonella

Powders capsules and teas made from the herbal alternative kratom have been linked to salmonella infections in 28 people in the US the CDC announced Tuesday

Cases have been reported in California, Oregon, Utah and Arizona, the agency reported Tuesday, but no one has yet fallen ill in Nevada.

A doctor for the Centers for Disease Control told Channel 2 Action News this is the first time they've seen salmonella in Kratom products.

More than one-third of the poison center calls reported use of kratom in combination with other substances, such as illicit drugs, prescription opioids or over-the-counter medications, the CDC said.

Bad weather forces rescheduling of women's giant slalom event at PyeongChang
Additionally, Svindal and Jansrud could join Aamodt as the only Norwegian alpine skiers with multiple Olympic gold medals. That followed Sunday's postponement of the men's downhill .

According to the CDC, 28 people have been found with salmonella infections across 20 states; of those, 11 people were hospitalized due to the illness, though fortunately there are no reports of death.

"At this time, CDC recommends that people not consume kratom in any form".

Kratom enthusiasts say it's enjoyable to use recreationally, but say it is also useful for treating withdrawal from opioid use and can be used to treat pain.

Three changes for Liverpool against Southampton
Mohamed Salah continued his fabulous debut campaign with two goals against Tottenham last time out. Liverpool will provide a far sterner test.

An herbal supplement known as kratom is becoming popular in some North Dakota communities despite concerns from the Federal Drug Administration.

When the FDA began investigating the increase in contamination to imported spice in 2013, the agency warned that "general filth" could allow the bacteria to get into these products. The vast majority contaminated with salmonella create indications - including loose bowels, fever and stomach spasms - inside 12 to 72 hours of presentation to the microscopic organisms.

"Kratom is a plant native to southeast Asia that is consumed for its stimulant effects and as an opioid substitute", according to the CDC notice.

Court orders restoration of DACA program
The legal battle over DACA complicates a debate now underway in Congress on whether to change the nation's immigration laws. The judge said the Trump administration can still rescind the program in the future if it does it the right way.

"Cases of mixing kratom, other opioids and other types of medication is extremely troubling because the activity of kratom at opioid receptors indicates there may be similar risks of combining kratom with certain drugs, just as there are with FDA-approved opioids", Gottlieb said. In 2016, the Drug Enforcement Administration tried but failed to classify the plant as a Schedule I Controlled Substance. The CDC could not identify a common brand or supplier linked with this outbreak.
