The MSU Faculty Senate will call the question of a"no confidence vote against the Board of Trustees at its next meeting Feb. 13. WKAR File
In a 61-4 decision, MSU's Faculty Senate passed a vote of no confidence in the MSU Board of Trustees Tuesday during its meeting, effectively taking the stance on behalf of the entire MSU faculty that the trustees should be replaced.
News 10 has obtained an email sent by Michigan State University interim president John Engler to students, staff and alumni regarding the Larry Nassar lawsuits and the various sexual-assault investigations centered on the University.
Although the trustees are eight independent people and the vote does not specifically call for them to resign, LaDuca said the board needs to be replaced for the university to move forward.
Engler announced two leadership appointments Wednesday. It was part of a letter Engler wrote to the MSU community.
"I am not sure if the at-large members of the Steering Committee realize how insensitive and tone-deaf this motion makes us appear", Vickery said.
Across that span, the former MSU doctor pleaded guilty to child pornography charges and criminal sexual misconduct, drew a 60-year sentence in the pornography case and was publicly accused of sexual abuse by three former Olympic gymnasts - and as his toxic story splashed across the front pages, donations fell to $104.2 million from $138.8 million in the same period the year before.
The faculty had hoped the board would pick an interim president who had more academic experience and more experience in dealing with sexual assault issues.
"I viewed with great concern a recent ESPN report that gathered considerable national attention in no small part because it showed a promotional graphic of our head football coach and men's basketball coach with Larry Nassar".
"That has been a burden that must be lifted", Engler said in his letter.
An ESPN Outside the Lines article by Paula Lavigne and Nicole Noren published on February 1, it was reported that multiple Michigan State football and basketball players had been accused of sexually assaulting women during the respective tenures of Mark Dantonio and Tom Izzo.
The coaches were asked to refrain from comment while the reports were examined.
