South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) will convene a special meeting of its executive body on Monday, its spokesman said, amid mounting pressure on President Jacob Zuma to step down.

The two have quarrelled in recent months, with Ramaphosa publicly criticising Zuma's decision past year to fire his respected finance minister, Pravin Gordhan, and his failure to tackle corruption.

Addressing an ANC rally in the eastern province of Mpumalanga, Gwede Mantashe said ANC officials should be fearless and must be able to make hard decisions, but leaders had a duty to "analyze and mitigate risks".

Ramaphosa told the ANC supporters that discussions with Zuma over his possible resignation were taking place using Madiba's "style".
