Three changes for Liverpool against Southampton

SOUTHAMPTON ENGLAND- FEBRUARY 11 Mohamed Salah of Liverpool celebrates after scoring his sides second goal with Roberto Firmino of Liverpool and Andy Robertson of Liverpool during the Premier League match between Southampton and Liverpool at St Mary's

Liverpool - who had Virgil van Dijk making his first return to St Mary's Stadium since his £75million move - looked rather more switched on at the back in the second half and Southampton's chances dried up.

It was Liverpool who added the game's second goal against the run of play, though, adding a late first-half strike to their early one as Salah and Firmino once again combined to devastating effect.

Liverpool have officially named their starting side and substitutes to lock horns with Southampton in a Premier League clash at St Mary's this afternoon.

Firmino says he wants to "build a history" at Liverpool
"Over the years when I was playing maybe we took it for granted getting to the knockout stages of the Champions League ". Southampton: McCarthy; Cedric, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand; Romeu, Lemina; Ward-Prowse, Tadic, Boufal; Carillo.

Southampton occasionally threatened Loris Karius in the Red's goal, and actually had chances to upset Van Dijk's new side, however they were unable to take their chances.

The two team-mates displayed their telepathic understanding as Firmino, with his back to goal, flicked the ball into Salah's path in defence-splitting one-two.

Lovren has started on 18 occasions in the Premier League this season and the Croatian worldwide played alongside van Dijk against Spurs in the dramatic 2-2 draw at Anfield. Guido Carrillo starts up top.

Salah turned provider in the sixth minute when he picked out Roberto Firmino in the Southampton penalty area and the Brazilian calmly slotted past Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. Liverpool will provide a far sterner test. Mohamed Salah continued his fabulous debut campaign with two goals against Tottenham last time out.

Van Dijk had been subjected to criticism following shock defeats to Swansea and West Brom and conceding a last gasp penalty as Spurs snatched a draw at Anfield in his previous three outings.

"Our belief and our confidence was really down and for me this is the worst part of the game".
