Drowsy Driving Crashes Higher Than Federal Estimates

Study: More drivers asleep at the wheel than you realize

AAA Study: driving drowsy quadruples chances of getting in a crash

Americans aren't getting enough sleep and a new study finds drowsy driving is leading to many more auto crashes than previously thought.

AAA's analysis, which included studying video footage from the vehicles of over 3,500 drivers, estimates that drowsiness played a role as many as 8.8 percent to 9.5 percent of crashes.

A new report from AAA says that crashes caused by drowsy drivers are higher than federal estimates. Although it was never proven in court, prosecutors said sleep deprivation was the cause because the driver allegedly admitted to only getting five hours of sleep before the crash. Previous estimates put the numbers around 1 to 2 percent.

"For 10 years we've had to deal with her loss and not just the loss of who she was at 18, but the loss of the many years and who she would have become", Pearce said. "The only factor is he feel asleep", she said of the driver, who along with the other two passengers recovered from their injuries.

Polar bears go hungry as the Arctic ice melts
Even though the findings are based on only a few female polar bears, the result will be same for the polar bears of other areas. While four bears put on weight, five bears lost up to 10 per cent of their body weight - between 18 and 20 kg - in 10 days.

An executive from AAA suggests that missing just two to three hours of sleep can more than quadruple your risk for a crash.

Do not underestimate the power of a quick nap.

In a recent AAA survey, almost all drivers say that drowsy driving is a "serious safety threat", yet three out of ten respondents admitted to driving when they were so exhausted they had a hard time keeping their eyes open on at least one occasion in the past month.

AAA says coffee, rolling down the windows and singing out loud won't keep you awake.

North Korea says U.S. is considering attacking them
NORTH Korean tyrant Kim Jong-un is overweight because he used to be a hardcore WEIGHTLIFTER, it has been claimed. North Korea's most widely distributed state-owned newspaper wrote following the State of the Union address.

AAA recommends that drivers should travel at the times of day when they are normally awake, avoid heavy foods and avoid medication that causes drowsiness or other impairment.

"As many Americans struggle to balance their busy schedules, missing a few hours of sleep each day can often seem harmless", said Jake Nelson, director of Traffic Safety Advocacy and Research for AAA.

According to Schwind researchers studied the dash videos to examine drivers' faces in the last three minutes before the crashes took place.
