BREAKING: Train derails after smashing into truck – major rescue operation launched
Was [sic] the safety signals for the train carrying GOP leaders outside Charlottesville, Va., hacked to ensure the train would crash - or was the incident completely accidental?
The passenger of a garbage truck who was killed when an Amtrak train carrying dozens of Republican members of Congress slammed into it was identified as a 28-year-old Virginian. Layne said he has recently seen lines of cars stopped at the crossing, with the arms lowered even though no train was approaching.
A Republican aide said the train was partially derailed.
McSally was in the second-to-last rail vehicle at the time of the crash that killed one man and injured two others in the truck.
"It looks like it's been maybe cut in half. But we quickly saw that there was a truck that had been hit - a garbage truck", Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH told CNN's "New Day" Thursday. There was an impact, and it was clear we hit something.
Representative Jason Lewis of Minnesota said on Fox News that he had "a little bit of a whiplash and maybe a tiny bit of a concussion", and his office said he was being taken to a hospital to be examined.
Immediately after the crash, a law enforcement team surrounded the train with weapons drawn and searched the area for possible attackers while the injured were treated, said a local emergency worker, speaking on condition of anonymity. " ... You always have thoughts and prayers going out to those who suffered and their families".
The train taking House Republicans from Washington to a retreat in West Virginia collided with the garbage truck in Crozet, Virginia, on Wednesday.
Burgess said he then saw the other victim on the ground about 50 feet away who had much worse injuries. Norman said the impact was so startling, it caused some members of congress to fall to the floor.
An injured person was carried across the train tracks.
Yoho, a veterinarian, said train staff came through the cars asking if anyone there had medical training.
Congressman Tom Cole said first responders evacuated at least two people who were injured, and who were apparently on the truck.
The retreat started on Wednesday and would end on Friday. Soon they would be back on the train for the 15 mile ride back to Charlottesville, where they would board buses for the last 165 miles of their journey.
Two Amtrak crew members also were transported to a hospital, along with two passengers.
He said other transportation methods will need to be arranged as the front of the train is smashed up. "Thank you to those who have reached out and please pray for the safety of all involved", Rep. Elise Stefanik, a New York Republican, tweeted. No injuries were reported, but there was damage to the train's engine and the vehicle, which was driven by a 70-year-old woman who got out of her auto before the train hit.
In 2016, Marshall said, the driver of a pickup truck hit the crossing gate and fled.
