E-commerce giant Amazon on Thursday unveiled a shortlist of 20 locations for its planned second headquarters, with the Canadian city of Toronto figuring on the list.

"Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough - all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity", said a statement from Holly Sullivan of Amazon Public Policy. The list of finalists strayed from the West Coast (where Amazon originated), and included many locations in the Midwest and on the East Coast - including the cities of Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York and Miami.

238 cities across the United States were eager to become the home of HQ2, Amazon's new headquarters.

Three metropolitan Washington, D.C., sites made the cut, while Toronto was the only non-US city on the list.

"Move quickly. Companies like this and other tech companies are growing quickly within the US, and when they locate in your city, they're going to hire a lot of people, and you need to be prepared to move quickly with them on issues like housing and transit and public space".

"Our county, regional and state partners are enthusiastic to continue conversations with Amazon, to deliver the solutions they need for long-term success".
