Bruce Mc Arthur appears in this undated
Bruce McArthur, a 66-year-old Toronto man, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the case on Thursday and made a brief appearance in court Friday.
Standing outside the court, Alphonso King and his husband John Allen told CP24 they went to the proceedings because they wanted to see the man accused in the killing of their acquaintance, Andrew Kinsman.
The LGBT folk of Toronto have begged authorities since April 2017 to treat a series of disappearances by gay men as the work of a serial murderer.
"It was intense, " he said.
"I can be a bit shy until i get to know you, but am a romantic at heart", the profile, seen in a screen grab, reads.
She says the last day they searched for their brother was on December 9. "So that's why we're pissed off".
King said that since the first man, Skandaraj Navaratnam, went missing in 2010, there have been concerns among those who live or frequent Church-Wellesley Village that foul play could be to blame.
The 519 Community Centre is planning a press conference for media this afternoon, as well as bereavement counselling for the families of the victims.
Amid fears over the summer that police weren't taking these cases seriously, Richmond said the investigation into Kinsman's disappearance was in the process of "ramping up", and police were getting set to conduct another search of his apartment.
He declined to specify how McArthur had met the two men. He then started carrying a personal safety alarm after a missing woman, 22-year-old Tess Richey, was found dead in a nearby building, a case police have said is unrelated.
The arrest has been "a relief, " he said. But it was also shocking to realize that the suspect was someone he had encountered in the neighbourhood, he said.
A friend of Kinsman, a local community advocate, told GSN last July, 'We all know Andrew, so it's concerning.
The sisters of a man presumed to have been killed after vanishing from Toronto's gay village said they searched for him for months only to have their last hope snatched away this week when police charged a man with his murder.
"We believe he is responsible for the deaths of Mr. Esen and Mr. Kinsman, and we believe he is responsible for the deaths of other men who have yet to be identified", Toronto Det.
On Thursday, police said new evidence surfaced this week that gave them a "definitive link", but they did not elaborate further.
Outside the courthouse, King and Allan accused police of using the gay community as a photo opportunity and said they should have been focused on finding Esen and Kinsman last summer, not anxious about if they were going to march in the Pride Parade.
Idsinga said investigators had been looking into McArthur's involvement for several months, but evidence recovered Wednesday prompted McArthur's arrest.
