WikiLeaks' Australian founder, Julian Assange, 46, was granted asylum by Ecuador in August 2012 and has remained sheltered in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid arrest ever since.
An FCO spokesman said: 'The government of Ecuador recently requested diplomatic status for Mr Assange here in the UK.
The reaction of the MFA comes one day after Quito reportedly granted an ID card to Assange.

Espinosa had said on Tuesday her government was looking at the possibility of a "third country or a personality" stepping in to resolve the stand-off.
"Ecuador is now exploring other solutions in dialogue with the United Kingdom, like good offices of renowned authorities, other states, or global organizations that could facilitate a just, final and dignified solution for all parties", Espinosa told a press conference in Quito.
Mr Assange has been in the small embassy in Knightsbridge ever since.
Mr Assange faces arrest for breaking his bail conditions if he leaves Ecuador'sLondon embassy, where he has resided since 2012, claiming asylum.
The charges against Assange have been dropped by Swedish prosecutors due to the impossibility of serving him notice, but the Metropolitan Police, which spent millions of pounds maintaining watch over the embassy, said he still faced a charge of failing to surrender to a court. The WikiLeaks chief believes that the U.S. government is seeking his extradition and prosecution. The Ecuadorian government has granted him political asylum.
The UK has also refused to guarantee that Mr Assange will not be extradited to the United States where he could face charges for his role in releasing classified military documents.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said last April that Assange's arrest remains "a priority", adding, "Whenever a case can be made, we will seek to put some people in jail". Assange and his website have also leaked information from Guantanamo Bay, private emails belonging to 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, and emails from the Democratic National Committee.
