Alligators beat ‘bomb cyclone’ by freezing themselves in place

When the water or air temperatures are too low for them to be active, experts say these reptiles go into a "state of brumation".

With the brutally cold temperatures affecting a good portion of the country, many people and animals are struggling to stay warm; including alligators. "It is not abnormal for them [the alligators] to do this because they know they have to breathe".

A video from the Shallotte River Swamp Park in North Carolina has gone viral has it shows how a cold-blooded alligator survives when a pond freezes over.

Manhunt underway for MI couple accused of scalding 4-year-old
Marshals are searching for a Sumpter Township man and woman after police found a 4-year-old daughter dead in their home. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office later issued a warrant for the arrest of Diaz and Fields, according to police.

In the video, an alligator is seen sticking its snout out of a frozen swamp. The creatures lower their body temperature and metabolism so they can survive.

"They didn't care. They're just doing their thing", said Howard.

Once warmer weather returns and melts the ice, the alligators will thermoregulate their body temperatures with a spot of sunbathing.

Some users also questioned as to what would happen if someone steps on a frozen alligator.
