When the water or air temperatures are too low for them to be active, experts say these reptiles go into a "state of brumation".
With the brutally cold temperatures affecting a good portion of the country, many people and animals are struggling to stay warm; including alligators. "It is not abnormal for them [the alligators] to do this because they know they have to breathe".
A video from the Shallotte River Swamp Park in North Carolina has gone viral has it shows how a cold-blooded alligator survives when a pond freezes over.
"Just shows you how smart they are, and how fantastic it is to see them do this exact survival technique, no matter how horrific it looks to us humans", park owner Linda McMullan wrote on Facebook. This is the time of year when they are just hanging out, waiting for it to get warm'.
Some users also questioned as to what would happen if someone steps on a frozen alligator.
